Business Development Representative, North America
--W4 Games - Remote--
We're looking for someone who knows the games industry and knows how to meet people in it. Your job is to find new business for W4 Games across North America, work out which of it is worth pursuing, and hand it to our technical and executive team to carry forward.
Most of our business so far has come to us: specialized professional services like performance optimization, engine customization, and platform enablement for sophisticated studios. We believe that's a small fraction of the demand out there. You'd be the person who goes and finds the rest.
We're not the cheap option. We're the expert one:
the team companies bring in to reduce the risk of adopting Godot, whether they're still evaluating it or already building on it.
This position reports to the COO.
What success looks like
What we are looking for beyond the checklist
The requirements below matter, but they won't be what makes someone great in this role.
You're a natural connector. You can walk into a room, start a conversation with almost anyone, follow it wherever it goes, and leave having met the people who matter. You keep growing your network because you want to, not because someone set you a target.
You also work things out on your own. Nobody will hand you a list. You'll build the map yourself, figure out where the leads are, and go get them. When something isn't working, you tell us.
You've done outbound sales before. You've worked a list, sent the messages nobody asked for, followed up, and turned some of them into meetings. Paired with deep knowledge of the industry and an instinct for spotting an opportunity, that's what we're hiring for.
What you'll be doing
- Mapping the games industry, and adjacent real-time 3D verticals like industrial, to work out where our opportunities are.
- Finding and reaching new prospects through that map, through events, through cold outreach, and through your own network.
- Qualifying opportunities: working out whether there's a genuine need, a budget, and a fit before handing them to our technical and executive team.
- Staying involved after handoff, so you see how your opportunities turn out and sharpen what you look for.
- Representing W4 at conferences and industry events, and keeping relationships going beyond any single deal.
- Improving how we handle inbound interest so nothing slips through.
- Keeping our CRM current. The quality of your handoff is the product.
- Exploring how technology can help you find and qualify opportunities faster.
Required
- At least 5 years in business development roles in the games industry. You know how the industry works and who's in it.
- A track record in outbound sales. You've generated new business from scratch, finding and opening conversations with people who didn't already know you.
- Commercial instinct. You can explain why someone should care about what we do, and tell genuine interest from polite interest.
- An existing network of studios, publishers, or platform contacts in North America.
- Technical enough to hold a credible first conversation with an engineering buyer. You don't need depth, but you can't be lost.
- Able to travel around 40 percent of the time for conferences, customer meetings, and team gatherings.
Recommended
- Some experience closing deals or negotiating terms.
- Background in or around middleware, engines, or developer tools.
- A visible presence in the games community, at events, meetups, or online.
- Experience in a startup or an all-remote company.
- CRM experience, or a commitment to making one central to how you work.
About
W4 Games was founded by the leadership of the Godot Engine project to help the industries that depend on real-time technology reclaim control of it. We give companies the freedom to innovate that comes with an in-house engine, without needing an in-house engine team. Games are where we started and where our expertise runs deepest, but we believe open source technology belongs in every industry, and we work well beyond games today. Our products and services let teams get the most out of Godot and ship with confidence.
Equal Opportunity
W4 Games is an equal opportunity employer committed to providing an open, collaborative and friendly work environment and does not discriminate based on gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, language proficiency, age, political orientation, nationality, religion or other similar characteristics.
Hiring and Location
All members of the W4 Games team work remotely. This position is open to candidates in North America. This is a full-time independent contractor engagement. It starts with a 90-day probationary period, followed by a one-year contract with the option to renew. W4 covers all travel costs.
Compensation is $110,000 to $170,000 annually, fixed, with no commission component. Our sales cycles run long, and we care more about the quality of an engagement than its size, so we'd rather not have you chasing deals that aren't a fit.
Why Join Us
Work with technology that millions of developers use, in a company built to make open source viable commercially.
Sell work that solves hard problems for studios shipping commercial products.
Build the function rather than inherit it. What comes next is yours to shape.
Wide latitude. You'll run your own pipeline your own way, with direct access to leadership when you need a decision.
We're small enough that your work is visible. We're growing quickly, but you'll still know everyone here.
Flexible hours. We're spread across many timezones and work async by default, so we care about what you deliver rather than when you're online.
A remote team that gets together in person. We fly the whole company out for company gatherings.
