With the launch of Samsung Galaxy XR, the first headset powered by Google’s Android XR operating system, we’re excited to announce that Godot now supports this new platform, and that W4 Games is working to make it happen.

The new Godot OpenXR Vendor Plugin v4.2.0 introduces Android XR support for developers using Godot 4.5 and newer, allowing projects to be exported to this new environment. The Godot XR Editor has also been updated and runs seamlessly on Samsung Galaxy XR, and users can download it from Google Play by joining the Foundation’s testing group.

A Joint Effort Between W4 Games and the Godot Foundation in Support of AndroidXR

Both W4 Games and the Godot Foundation are working to bring robust Android XR support to the engine. W4 Games is leading the development of vendor-specific extensions and advanced integrations that go beyond baseline compatibility, ensuring developers can access the full capabilities of the Android XR platform.

As part of this effort, W4 Games is also supporting the Godot Foundation with a significant donation to help sustain ongoing OpenXR development and strengthen the ecosystem as a whole.

As our W4 Games XR contributor David Snopek explained:

“The plugin delivers the initial support for Android XR, but we’re already working with the Android XR team to integrate all the advanced functionality that makes Android XR unique. The goal is for Godot developers to have access to every feature the platform offers.”

Building the Future of Open XR

We believe that open tools and shared collaboration are the best way forward. By combining Android XR’s support, the Foundation’s stewardship, and our technical contributions, we’re paving the way for a stronger, more connected XR ecosystem.
